Brain injury survival tips

Posted on January 24, 2010 at 4:37 PM

Welcome to my first blog entry.  Currently, I'm 3 1/2 years into my recovery and I feel I'm still making progress, although slow. I ride the stationary bike and use the treadmill. I also do arm and leg exercises. To work my brain, I do a lot of computer brain games and the Wii's Big Brain Academy. I'm interested in hearing from anyone for additional tips to a full and faster recovery.

Hi, Rachel! I came across some new information on the brain and how it can continue to improve all thoughout life! If you try and put your brain to use, which I know you do! There's also a beat selling book about it. It is very interesting and amazing new infomation!!! I have to scan it into my PC. I will then send it to you! Also, to your dad. So, be on the lookout for my e-mail! & tell your dad also! With love, thoughts, and prayers, Brenda

Thanks for this information, it will be of benefit.

Dear Rachel,
I don't know if you have public transit where you live, but if you do I suggest you try it out. It has been really wonderful for me. 1) You get the exercise of walking to and fro the bus stop. 2) Time management skills could improve i.e. what time do i need to leave the house in order to get there on time, etc. Also, I try to walk anywhere that's within a reasonable walking distance(in my case a 3 mile radius). BANISH the car whenever possible. This mentality has improved my mobility substantially. Don't let the fear of falling down prevent you from going as fast as you possibly can... with the exception of crossing the street, which is when you've gotta be careful. I feel every fall I've taken helps as much as it hurts. Try getting the mail and doing lunges on the way there and back. Open the microwave with your left hand.

Keep up the amazing work!
Sincerely,
Rita M.

Rita, thank you for your advice. Actually one of my good friends lives very close to a bus stop and we were discussing practicing public transportation this coming summer. It's funny, everybody tells me to open the microwave with my left hand... and the drawers, doors, fridge, tv etc. etc.

The Climb

Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb

The struggles I'm facing
The chances I'm taking
Sometimes might knock me down
But no, I'm not breaking

And I, I got to be strong
Just keep pushing on
