Summer 2010

Posted on August 15, 2010 at 7:55 AM

This summer has been a busy one, but I have had no problem finding things to occupy my time. Here is a list of some.

I have:

1.) Vacationed to North Carolina twice; in June for my cousin’s high school

graduation and then again in August to attend a family reunion on my mom’s side.

2.) Worked at the concession stand at our community pool.

3.) Attended the four day Youth Leadership Forum for people with disabilities.

4.) Attended another family reunion in July;  this time on my dad’s side.

5.) Stayed active with Toastmaster’s meetings, where I spoke on dealing with adversity.

6.) Attended two weddings; one was my cousin Jaimie's, where I gave a scripture reading, the other my friend Caitlin’s.

7.) Worked with a new therapeutic device called the Walkaide, which is a tool that sends electrical currents to help raise my left foot, therefore allowing me to walk without wearing any type of leg brace. I also received a botox injection to my left arm, which helped decrease spasticity in my hand.

8.) Had many routine doctor’s appointments and continued rehabilitating both physically and occupationally at home.

This summer has been filled with many things which have kept me busy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Have all of you enjoyed your summers as well?

So happpy to hear you've had such an eventful and great summer! Though I have diabilites, I DON'T consider myself disabled. I have pushed myself - as you have - from day 1. We can't stop nor give up! WE'VE COME A LONG WAY!!! I know in my heart and with God, you will defeat all odds. You just keep ceasing to amaze me!

Rita,

It's great to hear about all of the activities you've been doing lately. I bet Spain was a great trip for you, I'd like to go someday. I'm so glad that you find strength in my positive attitude. But please know, I also find strength from other TBI survivors, like yourself. Keep in touch, I'm really interested in how you're doing and what you've been up to.

Hey Rachel,

It still cheers me up to see your updates in my rarely checked email box. My summer was a testament to the human will. My traumatic brain injury was two and some odd months ago, yet I am determined to fight for the same opportunities as a non-disabled person may have. And my determination paid off. This summer I went to Spain on a program at my college and had a blast! Two years ago I struggled to walk a mile, this summer I walked across the entire colony of Gibraltar and up the Rock of Gibraltar (it was 18 miles!) in one day! I couldn't believe it when I crunched the numbers. My body was in shambles the next day, but it was an ache of accomplishment. A pulsing reminder of the miracle of my presence on Earth. Thanks for your positive attitude. It is a reminder on my bad days to find my optimism.

Sincerely,
Rita

The Climb

Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb

The struggles I'm facing
The chances I'm taking
Sometimes might knock me down
But no, I'm not breaking

And I, I got to be strong
Just keep pushing on
