Improved Memory

Posted on April 2, 2010 at 9:24 AM

One of the biggest obstacles I face as a result of this injury is short-term memory loss. I know that without a memory, I will never have full independence. I was told there was a time when my memory span was only minutes at best. As time went by, my memory slowly improved, yet still remains a challenge. But when I woke up this morning, after a good night’s sleep (which is also a challenge), I was lying in bed trying to remember the previous evening. That’s when it came to me; I realized today is Good Friday and my thought process led me to think about yesterday being Holy Thursday. After putting two and two together, I vividly remembered attending Holy Thursday Mass, the procession concluding the service and even some of the people there I know. There have been many other instances of me remembering events from not only the night before, but also from weeks, months and even years before. Not bad for someone whose doctor told her family she will never have a memory lasting more than  ten minutes. I understand for my memory to continue to improve, my brain must be well rested and I must continue with the memory strategies I have learned in therapy. All this continues to give me hope to one day regain my independence. Happy Easter everybody!

Rachel, I am so very happy that you can have a "life" now, and even if the suffering is not over, I pray that as you struggle with your memory that your heart grows ever closer to our Lord so that He may continue to lift you up to Him. Though we cannot "carry" your cross for you as it is "your's" to bear, we can pray for you each day and ask that you grow stronger and are able to do so. I also want to say that you have a great step mother, I always loved her growing up. She never was anything but a good friend, and Brooke and I became re-acquainted when we were in choir together and she helped me when I lost my son Luke, cried with me and let me know I was NOT alone in my pain. I will be forever grateful for her and Drue's friendship. God Bless you Rachel.

Rachel, you write so movingly--so beautifully. Have you ever thought of writing a book about all of this??--it would be an inspiration to many people--who knows: stories of how God has held you ( and all of us) in His arms and brought you to this place--these stories might bring other folks to Him. You have mentioned being an inspirational speaker---how about being an inspirational writer too??

Happy Easter, my darling grand daughter....with much love....Reebs

Hi Rachel,

I am so glad to hear about your improvments! TBI is tough, but so are you. I always knew you would make it to this point, and will keep improving forrever. I am so, so proud of you! Keep working!

On a side note, do you journal? I have heard that journaling can help memory. Just a thought:) Take care and have a great Easter!

Hi Rachel! I know your memory WILL continue to improve!!! As mine has. It is a long, slow, and sometimes frustrating process! I have come a long way. You have also! It's unfortunate that you and I have gone thru the same ordeal. But WE ARE SURVIVORS! I was very shocked, yet happy at the same time that I had a memory come back to me after nearly 18 years! I jjust can't put it into words how I felt! It was a great feeling though! I pray and know with God's help you will keep continuing to improve!

With Love, thoughts , and prayers,
Brenda

The Climb

Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb

The struggles I'm facing
The chances I'm taking
Sometimes might knock me down
But no, I'm not breaking

And I, I got to be strong
Just keep pushing on
