My son was shot in the head on March 15, 2009. The doctors told us he had a 1% chance of survival and if he did survive he WOULD be in vegetative state. We took in every word they said & we believed our son would not want to live like that. But, since the very moment I saw him on the hospital bed, I had this inner feeling that he was going to make it. The hospital staff, my husband and immediate family told me to let him go. I have regretted this decision every since and do believe that he would be alive today had I not given the final word. I hate myself so much. Our family is trying to move on without our son & brother, but find it so hard since I still so believe he would have made it!! I am in counseling and trying to work through these emotions. Rachel, I live in Oxford, Ohio but I am from Columbus, so I read the Columbus Dispatch everday. I read your story last year and wow! You really are a miracle. I had a traumatic brain injury when I was 21 yrs old. I am 43 now. I was in an accident with a semi-truck on 71 N near Worthington. While our circumstances are different, many of your pictures are similar to ones I have of myself-the hospital, therapy, the friends. I had no short term memory for awhile but it did come back. I bet you've been told "your youthful age is a plus" many times. I got tired of hearing it, and may have even doubted it, but it really is true. You have everything going for you-brillant doctors and therapists, supportive and loving family and friends, and the inner strength and work ethic to perserve. Congratulations on your stunning recovery and keep fighting! Get lots of sleep and if you can tolerate strenous exercise (aerobic, cardio) that seemed to help me then and even 22 years laters, still makes a difference with my memory. Hello, my darling grandchild. You received a message from David Eiteman today. He is a very special friend of mine from long ago. He lived right up the street from me, and was in my grade at school. We used to do lots of things together--ride bicycles in the street--we were so proud that we could ride backwards--sitting on the handle bars! We walked on top on the sewer line that ran through the Duke Forest to the treatment plant. This sewer line was at least 20 feet in the air--if our mothers had known they would have killed us!!! Karen was a childhood Durham neighbor of mine, especially during our elementary school days. She had wonderful pigtails, and trying to pull them was one of the highlights of any day was if I succeeded in tugging them! (Such was how 3rd and 4th grade affection was demonstrated!) I am so impressed with what I guess could best be called your saga. To have gone through all you have, and to recover and be of good spirits is wonderful. Although I know it was much more difficult during the process than it appears in pictures after the fact. I even recognize the Ohio State football helmet on your head, having gone to Michigan myself.
